Recent Changes in Immigration Law: New Statutes and Changes to Case Law Present New Opportunities for Immigrants

Presented by: George W. Abbes, Esq.

Speaker Bio: Mr. Abbes has been a practicing attorney since December 1982. As a result of this lengthy legal career, he has been exposed to many different areas of law, but his practice has always emphasized criminal and immigration law and the convergence between these two areas of law. Mr. Abbes has litigated over a hundred jury trials including homicides and other serious felonies. He has been approved by the judges of the Orange County Superior Court to handle homicide cases, three strikes cases and all types of serious felony cases, and is frequently appointed by the court to represent clients with these type of cases as well as misdemeanor cases. The majority of Mr. Abbes' clients are referred to him by other lawyers. Mr. Abbes frequently receives client referrals from immigration lawyers who do not handle criminal matters, who are sensitive to the immigration consequences of criminal convictions and are aware of Mr. Abbes' competence in this field. He also receives referrals from criminal defense attorneys in order to assist clients in removal proceedings or in order to consult with criminal defense attorneys prior to the resolution of the client's case in order to attempt to avoid the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. As a first generation immigrant, Mr. Abbes is acutely sensitive to the immigration consequences that can arise from criminal prosecution.

For over 14 years, Mr. Abbes has been lecturing and training other attorneys to avoid the immigration consequences of criminal convictions for their clients. He is frequently consulted by criminal defense attorneys in order to assist them with these types of issues. Mr. Abbes is very generous with his time and takes on pro bono cases and volunteers in order to assist clients. He also takes phone calls from attorneys to give them free consultations when appropriate.

Mr. Abbes is a legal advisor to the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana.
