The Unauthorized Practice of Law

Presented By: Kristin Ritsema, Esq.
Presenter Biography
Ms. Ritsema is a California attorney and former prosecutor for the State Bar of California with more than 27 years of experience prosecuting attorney disciplinary matters and regulatory matters before the State Bar Court. She handled thousands of complaints of attorney misconduct with full case responsibility from investigation of allegations of misconduct through filing and litigation of disciplinary charges, discovery, settlement negotiations, and trial. She tried dozens of disciplinary cases, in every one of which the respondent was found culpable of misconduct, and successfully resolved many more through stipulation. She also handled numerous moral character and reinstatement cases and several appellate matters before the Review Department of the State Bar Court. For many years, she supervised teams comprised at various times of attorneys, investigators, paralegals, complaint analysts, and administrative staff. And, for more than two decades, she taught State Bar Ethics School and State Bar Client Trust Accounting School, both designed to educate attorneys who found themselves involved in the discipline system in order to avoid future professional misconduct.
Ms. Ritsema retired from the State Bar in 2021 and currently conducts independent case audits for the State Bar. She lives in Orange County with her husband, who is also an attorney. Ms. Ritsema obtained her undergraduate degree in economics from the University of California, Berkely, and her law degree from the University of California, Davis.
