Miracles for Kids Backpack Drive 2015

OCPA is partnering with Miracles for Kids, a nonprofit organization in Southern California to collect backpacks to benefit Miracles for Kids’ children in the Back-to-School Basket of Miracles Drive.  Collected backpacks will be filled with school supplies and healthy snacks and delivered to critically ill children and their siblings as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

The Miracles for Kids backpack filling and distribution event will take place in August.  We are asking any member who would like to donate to bring a new, unused kids backpack for ages K-12 to any OCPA event by August 1st.  All those who donate will be entered into a drawing for a FREE OCPA MEMBERSHIP FOR 2016. For a tax write-off receipt, please provide proof of backpack purchase and Miracles for Kid’s will provide the donation receipt. Members can also make a direct donation to Miracles for Kids.  

Closer to August OCPA will be posting a volunteer event to help fill the backpacks that are collected. Details to be provided at that time.

About Miracles for Kids Miracles for Kids provides financial and other aid to low-income families throughout Southern California with children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. These families struggle to maintain stability and meet basic financial obligations such as rent/mortgage, food, transportation, utilities, medicine and insurance. Miracles for Kids operates critically needed core financial aid, health care and food delivery programs, in addition to wellness programs aimed at the emotional stability of the entire family. OCPA is collecting backpacks for Miracles for Kids, a nonprofit organization serving children with life-threatening illnesses and the families that care for them. By operating programs that provide financial aid, basic needs and wellness to patients and their families, Miracles for Kids creates stability when families are crumbling from the financial and emotional devastation of fighting for their child's life.

OCPA Supports Our Troops by Collecting Socks for The Hugs Project

Continuing in 2014, the OCPA will support our troops by collecting socks at each General Meeting and Section Meeting for The Hugs Project.  Started in 2004, The Hugs Project is dedicated to sending care packages to our Service Men and Women deployed in the Middle East. Tube and crew socks are needed.  Wicking socks are especially needed.


Miracles for Kids - Spring Basket of Miracles

Our first Pro Bono event of the year was held on Saturday, April 12th 2014 at the Miracles for Kids offices in Tustin. All of the volunteers had a blast helping to assemble and wrap the gorgeous baskets!  Each volunteer was given an information sheet with the name and age of the child as well as the disease they are fighting.  The sheet also included the names and ages of their siblings.  Next, they were able to select a variety of really great items to put in the baskets – everything from toys to shoes to games and puzzles to mason jars filled with colorful ingredients to make cookies and the recipe and so much more.  Then, the volunteers went to the wrapping stations to cover the baskets in cellophane and brightly colored ribbons.  It was really something to see everyone get into the spirit and gather the items they thought the child would like.  The time went by so fast … it seemed like in no time we had 160 baskets assembled and ready to go.  We’re also proud to say that our team was the only one that had 100% of the people show up so kudos to Volunteer Team OCPA!!

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen Pro Bono Event

Registration is now open for our next heart-warming Pro Bono event when OCPA volunteers will help serve warm, nutritious meals through the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen event to be held May 31, 2014.  Registration is limited to 10 participants so please sign up today if you'd like to be part of this wonderful activity.

Since 1986, the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen staff and volunteers have provided meals to hundreds of Orange County residents in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere.  They take pride in preparing and serving meals that they would serve to their own families at home.  They offer a well-balanced meal made fresh daily, consisting of vegetable soup, lettuce and fruit salads, hearty and filling side dishes, breads, muffins, desert, milk and water.  Currently the Soup Kitchen serves more than 300 guests per day, seven days a week.

Please join OCPA in helping to make a difference by directly serving those in need in the community. We will help prepare and serve breaksfast at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen on Saturday , May 31, Saturday, June 21, and Saturday July 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The Soup Kitchen is located at 720 West 19th Street, Costa Mesa, 92627.

OCPA Supports Our Community by Volunteering Our Time and Resources

In addition to the events that OCPA is directly participating in, we’d like to keep you informed about events around our community that would be great volunteer opportunities to participate in on your own.  The first event we’re highlighting is the HomeAid Essentials event that starts Friday, May 2 and runs through Sunday, May 11, 2014.  Did you know that families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population and they are struggling to provide basic essentials such as diapers for their children?  On average, a family needs 3,000 diapers a year for one child and adding in other costs, such as wipes and care items, makes this an annual cost of over $1,000 a year.

To address this great need in the community, HomeAid Essentials is a community-wide effort to collect diapers, wipes, care products and food for homeless infants and toddlers. HomeAid Essentials supports agencies throughout Orange County that are serving homeless families.  Over the past six years, HomeAid has partnered with more than 500 businesses, community organizations and individuals that have collected over 2 million items for homeless children.  To find out more about the event and how you can support this wonderful organization, you can contact Gina Scott, Director of Community Engagement at gina@homeaidoc.org (949) 553-9510.  The HomeAid Essentials website is homeaidessentials.org.
