Practical Research and Writing Methods


Do you get nervous when tasked to conduct legal research for a motion or interoffice memorandum?! Well….don’t!

This presentation will cover basic legal research skills and the legal research process. In addition, this presentation will provide tips in developing a game plan for efficient and effective legal research using online resources, such as West Law Next and Lexis Advance, and secondary sources. Basic writing tips will also be discussed to make drafting your next motion easier. Whether it’s a refresher or you're getting acquainted with these two main research tools, come and join us for some practical research and writing methods.

Speaker Bio: Jillian-Leigh Balancio has been practicing law since 2009 and has diverse experience in many areas including, Family Law, Probate, Estate Planning, Civil Litigation, Personal Injury, and Lemon Law.  Jillian graduated cum laude from University of California – Riverside with a degree in Political Science/Law and Society and a minor in Anthropology. She attended Western Michigan University – Thomas M. Cooley Law School and served as a Senior Associate Editor for the Thomas M. Cooley Law Review. In addition, Jillian was a student attorney for the Estate Planning Clinic and provided legal services to local low-income senior citizens.

She currently serves as a board member and Community Service Co-Chair for the Filipino-American Lawyers of Orange County.

Event Fee: $10.00 for OCPA members, $20.00 for non-members and $20.00 for all walk-ins who have not pre-registered online (both members and non-members) IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. Walk-ins are on a first come first serve basis.

*Cancellation Policy - If you need to cancel your reservation, please e-mail the Litigation Section Chair, Susan Schwartz at susanslaw@yahoo.com. No refunds will be issued. Credit for a future meeting will be held in your OCPA account which may be applied to future meetings if your cancellation is received no less than 48 hours prior to the event.
