The June General Meeting was held on  June 12th, 2013 at the Radisson Hotel Newport Beach.  Sheniece Smith, Associate Counsel for Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), spoke about The Basics of Consent Law.   This presentation walked us through the health care fundamental concept of consent law.  Ms. Smith discusessed when consent for a medical procedure is needed, who can give consent, and what form consent should be provided in.  She discussed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Rule (HITECH), and the protections these rules provide for patient health information. She also discussed issues which apply generally in the legal field such as advance health care directives and subpoenas for medical information.  She emphasized the varying laws that apply particularly to minors and the elderly.

Here's the meeting handout in case you missed it.
